Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that develops in thousands of people every year and can in many cases be fatal. Despite its severity, many people are unaware of what it is or who it can affect. Because mesothelioma is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos, there are certain parties who can possibly be held liable for the cancer. The asbestos and mesothelioma lawyers at our Salt Lake City, Utah-area firm are committed to helping you recover damages for the hardship you have endured and will continue to endure.

What is asbestos?

Asbestos is an umbrella term that describes an entire group of fibrous minerals that have historically been mined for their ability to resist heat and chemicals. When added to plastics, cement, insulation, and other materials, asbestos adds strength and heat resistance.

Starting in the late 1800s and continuing well into the 1900s, asbestos was used in a wide variety of industries as manufacturers found uses for it ranging from automobiles to construction. From the 1940s to the 1970s, the use of asbestos went unchecked and, as a result, skyrocketed. However, during the late 1970s, reports of the health hazards that asbestos presents began to surface, causing consumer groups to call for the elimination of asbestos from all products that people come in contact with.

So far, more than 6,000 defendants have been accused of manufacturing and distributing products that contain asbestos. The asbestos lawyers at our office in the Salt Lake City, Utah area have successfully litigated many cases in which plaintiffs have sought compensation for the negative health effects that result from asbestos exposure. Contact Siegfried & Jensen if you believe that your health problems stem from exposure to asbestos.

What is mesothelioma?

Cancer of the mesothelium —the protective tissue surrounding the heart, lungs, stomach, and other internal organs — is called mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is almost exclusively linked to exposure to asbestos. It typically begins to develop in the pleura — the lining of the chest and lungs — and spreads out to other organs. While there are different types of mesothelioma, the most common type is pleural mesothelioma.

Symptoms of mesothelioma include chest pain, persistent coughing or wheezing, and shortness of breath as fluid accumulates in the pleura. In the advanced stages of the cancer, the patient may develop blood clots, jaundice, low blood sugar, and severe ascites.

Mesothelioma is an aggressive disease that is generally life-threatening. Treatments are available but are, for the most part, designed primarily to make the patient more comfortable. If you believe that you have had to endure physical, emotional, and financial hardships because of a life marred by mesothelioma, the asbestos and mesothelioma lawyers at our Salt Lake City, Utah-area firm are ready to fight for your right to be compensated.

Exposure to asbestos

When asbestos fibers are broken, they form a fine dust that can travel through the air. When a person inhales this dust, the fibers can settle in the mesothelium, where they proceed to compromise the safety and health of vital organs. Unfortunately, only a small amount of asbestos is necessary to create a serious health hazard.

Exposure to asbestos typically happens on the job for people who are employed in the automotive, construction, or shipbuilding industries. Other workers who are at high risk of exposure to asbestos include:

In addition, as asbestos fibers and dust readily attach themselves to clothing, skin, and hair, even the families and loved ones of those who are exposed to asbestos are at risk of inhalation. The length of exposure to asbestos particles does not play a substantial factor in the development of mesothelioma, as people who have been exposed to it for as briefly as a month and individuals who have inhaled it for multiple decades are both at risk for the disease.
