Prior to November of 2005, Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, the company that manufactures Ortho Evra®, claimed that their hormone patch was as safe as birth control pills. In light of the 16 deaths and thousands of complaints of adverse side effects that occurred as a result of complications with Ortho Evra® use between 2002 and 2005, Ortho-McNeil's claim began to seem more and more implausible.

While still approved by the FDA as of 2007, there is strong evidence that Ortho Evra® has several serious and, in some cases, potentially fatal side effects. The risk stems from the high levels of estrogen that are absorbed by Ortho Evra® users through the skin. Ortho Evra® delivers 60 percent more estrogen to the blood stream than an oral contraceptive. By increasing the concentration of estrogen in the blood to dangerous levels, Ortho Evra® use increases a woman's risk of developing blood clots in the legs. These blood clots can travel through the blood stream to the heart or brain, causing stroke, heart attack, and other cardiovascular problems.
