The Risks Associated with Cox-2 Inhibitors

Vioxx®, Celebrex®, and Bextra® are all members of a class of drugs known as COX-2 inhibitors. COX-2 inhibitors have been prescribed to patients to reduce pain, fever, and inflammation. COX-2 is a receptor responsible for sending pain and inflammation signals to the brain, but it also plays a role in allowing the kidneys to adequately regulate blood pressure. In April 2005 the FDA admitted that COX-2 inhibitors increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems.

Drug Recalls

The general consensus in the medical community is that the anti-inflammatory benefits of Vioxx® and Bextra® no longer outweigh the risks to a person's life and health. Vioxx® was voluntarily recalled in September of 2004. Since that time there have been over 10,000 individual claims and almost 200 class action lawsuits filed against Merck, the company that manufactured Vioxx®. Due to the severity of Vioxx® side effects many of these cases are classified as wrongful death claims.

In April of 2005 Bextra® was also taken off the market in response to an FDA recommendation for a recall. In addition to the increased risk of heart attack and stroke that accompanies all COX-2 inhibitors, Bextra® users were also at risk of developing a serious and sometimes fatal skin reaction.

If you have been injured by one of these dangerous drugs, our Vioxx® and Bextra® attorneys in the Salt Lake City, Utah area can offer you a free case evaluation to help you determine whether or not you are eligible for compensation. Contact our law office to schedule a time to meet with one of our experienced attorneys today.

Black Box Warning

In April 2005 the FDA required the manufacturer of Celebrex®, the last unrecalled COX-2 inhibitor, to include a black box warning on the drug's label. A black box warning is the strongest warning issued by the FDA without the recommendation of a recall. The Celebrex® black box warning states that use of Celebrex® results in an increased risk of cardiovascular and gastrointestinal problems. Doctors prescribe Celebrex® in the treatment of acute pain caused by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and severe menstrual discomfort. The drug can also be used to decrease the number of pre-cancerous colon and rectum polyps in individuals with an inherited predisposition to polyp development. If you were prescribed Celebrex® prior to April 2005 and have suffered one of more of its side effects you may be eligible for compensation. The Celebrex® attorneys at the Salt Lake City, Utah-area firm of Siegfried & Jensen can assist you in determining whether or not you have a valid Celebrex® claim.
