Zyprexa® is an anti-psychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar mania, and bipolar disorder. While it is still prescribed today, doctors have a responsibility to give every patient a detailed explanation of the drug's potential side effects. If you have been prescribed Zyprexa® and were not given a full account of Zyprexa® side effects by your physician, you may have been a victim of physician negligence. Some of the more serious side effects of Zyprexa® include the following.

In March of 2004 the FDA requested that the manufacturer of Zyprexa® issue a warning to doctors about the increased risk of diabetes and hyperglycemia associated with the drug.

In April of 2005 the FDA required that a black box warning, the strongest warning given by the FDA, be added to Zyprexa® product labels. The warning stated that clinical trials had suggested that Zyprexa® use for treatment of dementia in the elderly carried an increased risk of premature death.

Studies have also linked Zyprexa® to increased incidences of pancreatitis, heart disease, and morbid obesity.

When combined with other drugs, Zyprexa® can be dangerously reactive, amplifying the other drugs' effects. For example, taking Zyprexa® while using a high blood pressure treatment medication can lead to a dangerously sharp drop in blood pressure.

Zyprexa® Manufacturers – Intentional Concealment of Zyprexa® Side Effects?

In December 2006 The New York Times published an article accusing Eli Lilly, the company that manufactures Zyprexa®, of engaging in a decade-long cover-up of the harmful side effects of Zyprexa® use. According to the article, evidence of the cover-up was contained in hundreds of internal Eli Lilly documents and email messages turned over to The Times by an attorney for the mentally ill. As of 2007 Eli Lilly was still under legal investigation to determine if there truly was an intentional cover-up.
