Mantua, UT – Crash on US 89 Near Box Elder/Cache County Line Leaves Two Seriously Injured

Mantua, UT (March 31, 2019) – A traffic accident took place on Friday, March 22 on US 89 near the Box Elder and Cache county lines. The incident occurred shortly before 9:00 in the morning.

Utah Highway Patrol officers and emergency crews both responded to the call of an accident that involved a 2011 Subaru Impreza that had collided with a 2004 GMC Yukon. The accident closed US 89 through Sardine Canyon for nearly an hour because the wreck was blocking traffic in both directions.

Reports from the Utah Highway Patrol indicate that the Subaru was traveling south when she lost control of her vehicle. The car veered towards the middle of the roadway and spun around, ending up on the northbound side of the highway. The GMC who had been traveling in one of the northbound lanes then collided with the Subaru.

UHP officials stated that the driver of the Subaru, a 19-year-old woman whose name has not yet been released, was not wearing her seatbelt. This caused her to be thrown into the backseat of her vehicle upon impact. She received medical transport to Bringham City Community Hospital and from there was moved to Ogden Regional Medical Center. Her condition has recently been upgraded from critical to stable but serious.

The driver of the GMC was a 45-year-old male whose identity has also not been released. It took emergency road crews about 40 minutes to extricate the man from his SUV, He is also listed as being in serious condition.

The official cause of this crash still remains under investigation but UHP officials said that they are currently looking at speed as a factor based on eyewitness accounts.

Our thoughts are with both of the people who were injured in this collision. We hope they both have a swift and full recovery.

Highway Accidents in Mantua

Every year, more than 52,000 vehicle accidents take place on Utah’s roadways. These accidents result in over 22,000 injuries and 240 deaths. Accidents that take place on the highway tend to yield far more catastrophic injuries and fatalities than those accidents that take place on city streets. This is mainly due to the high volume of cars that are all in very close proximity to one another on the highway and the higher speeds at which all of these vehicles are driving.
