St. George, UT – Motorcycle vs SUV Causes Serious Injuries on State Route 20

St. George, UT (April 22, 2019) – A frightening accident took place on Thursday, April 18th that halted the eastbound and westbound lanes of traffic on State Route 20. Initial reports state that the collision occurred at roughly 4:30 in the afternoon.

Officers from the Utah Highway Patrol and other emergency responders reported to the scene of a traffic accident that involved a Buick Enclave and a motorcycle that had collided near milepost 13 on State Route 20 in Iron County.

According to initial statements that were given, the motorcycle started out behind the SUV in the eastbound lanes of traffic on SR 20, which connects Interstate 15 to U.S. Route 89. The SUV slowed down, intending to make a lefthand turn into a pullout on the side of the road when, unfortunately at the same time, the motorcycle attempted to pass the SUV on the left.

As the motorcycle tried to pass the larger vehicle in the westbound lane, the SUV initiated its turn, causing the rider to bounce off the rear of the Buick and be thrown clear of his bike.

While no one inside the Buick was harmed, including the 37-year-old female driver, the severity of the 56-year-old male rider’s injuries was such that a helicopter airlifted him to Dixie Regional Medical Center so that he could receive emergency medical treatment, some of which will require surgery. He is currently listed as being in stable condition.

The Utah Highway Patrol has stated that they do not consider speed to be a factor in this accident, attributing it instead to bad timing on everyone’s part.

We wish the man who was injured in this unfortunate accident a complete and very speedy recovery.

Motorcycle Accidents in St. George

In 2016, the Utah Department of Transportation reported that 1,168 motorcycle accidents took place across the state, resulting in approximately 1,014 injuries and 41 fatalities. Although motorcyclists make up only 1% of all vehicles on the road, they account for nearly 15% of all traffic-related deaths. Regrettably, this death toll has steadily risen year after year in the state of Utah.

Sadly, the people who live through motorcycle accidents usually suffer severe injuries due to the fact that they are much more exposed to the force of impact of caused by other vehicles than your average driver on the roadway. People who are injured in motorcycle accidents are able to file personal injury lawsuits against negligent drivers in order to receive financial compensation for their injuries and other losses.

We know that no amount of money will ease the pain a victim must endure from the aftermath of an accident, but it can help to mitigate some of the economic burdens they will be left to handle on their own.
